The Corona Chronicles - Palesa

This week we catch up with fashion stylist Palesa aka Masentle. When editing her Chronicle, I thought "how did we meet again?" and remembered that she had found M-SEW online and reached out to borrow some collection pieces for one of her styling jobs. We have kept in touch ever since!

Meeting up with Palesa's always a treat - she's as cute as a button and when we linked up to do her Chronicle, it was great to hear that her styling has been taking off recently having styled for music videos, major mags and some high fashion brands - get it gyal!

Keep on reading to get to know her better!

M-SEW: Where did you grow up?

PALESA: Hey! So I grew up in South Africa, Free State. But I moved to the UK when I was 12 years old.

Where’s your favourite place to live? At the moment I think I really like London... but I wouldn’t mind living in Johannesburg for a change of scene.

What artist/creator did you discover during lockdown?

I discovered a lot of really cool creatives during lockdown. There’s a platform called The Black Book which helps discover BAME creatives raging from photographers, producers, MUA’s etc. I think it’s important to support black creatives in the industry so platforms such as that are super handy.

What’s your favourite spot in your house/room/space? I’d say my garden. It’s super chilled and a chance to just get some fresh air.  What was your favourite book/film/song during lockdown? Being that I’m South African I think music has been a big part of lockdown. Specially Amapiano music, it’s basically Afro house but more piano infused. I think music is a great escape, it can really change your mood/ productivity. Especially whilst working on your aims and objectives. Favourite inspirational quote during lockdown? Hmm to be honest any James Wedmore quote is brilliant. He is a great mentor for positive thinking.

What new skills did you learn during lockdown? I actually learned to braid my own hair! I’m so happy about that. It something I never really thought about learning because in usual circumstances you can find someone else to do it.  What’s the most surprising thing you learnt about yourself during lockdown? The most surprising thing I learned about myself during lockdown is that I actually can move out of London if need be. I spent quarantine at my mums house in Wales and found that I didn’t necessarily miss London.. How have you changed during lockdown?  I think the biggest change I’ve noticed is my priorities and work ethic. Since lockdown I’ve been learning a lot about finance and working towards the future. More so starting to build my future by doing small things. For example learning to drive. Little things to help aid future me.

Film: Original music by Aden Peets.

What’s your personal lockdown/WFH style? I’m a stylist so I had a lot of transactions style wise during lockdown ha! I think at first I did make an effort to dress up etc especially for zoom calls or even the small trips to Tesco. But now I think I’ve found myself really into sporty clothes as they tend to be more comfortable.  Where’s your first trip post lockdown? Definitely South Africa ha, I miss home!!  Who’s your inspiration? At the moment I’m inspired by the people around me. It’s nice seeing everyone grow and get to their dreams. Just seeing everyone GET IT is pretty cool and inspiring to me.

Favourite meme during lockdown?

I don’t know if you follow the Shadeborough? It’s an English Instagram account that always posts relatable meme/quotes that are UK related. They had some pretty funny ones regarding toilet paper!

Who did you talk to the most during lockdown? I think I spoke most to my friend Tebby during lockdown, she’s a family friend. What plans did you have that were cancelled thanks to Rona?

I was meant to go to Amsterdam to my family friends on a girls trip. It was pretty sad that I had to cancel it last minute as it was added to the quarantine list.. I was really looking forward to it. But hey, let’s hope things can get back to normal soon!
